No fewer than 15 students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology as well as a suspected rapist and robber were injured in a crash on Sunday.
It was gathered that the accident occurred as the students conveyed the alleged rapist and robber, who they arrested, to the Police station.
One of the students, Fawole Isreal, told our correspondent that the suspect started dragging the steering with students in the bus.
He said, “In recent times, the crime rate at Ogbomoso, Oyo State, has become inordinately high. This is more so in areas where the student populace of LAUTECH reside. Reports of theft, burglary, assault and rape among many others have been on the increase.
“However, on Saturday, the entire student populace of LAUTECH, residing at Adenike area, rose in an uproar as one of the suspected notorious armed robbers and rapists, terrorising the neighbourhood, was caught in the act, when breaking into a particular students’ hostel.
“Minimal violence ensued as the intended victims immediately called upon the students’ union leaders and handed over the criminal to them.
“After the union leaders arrived the spot, they concluded that the he (the rapist) should be taken to the police station. As they were taking him to the station, he was dragging with them in the bus and that resulted into an accident. The bus stumbled about five times and 15 students, including the Students’ Representative Council speaker, Salami Olalekan, sustained varying degrees of injuries.”
It was gathered that the injured students were immediately taken to the university’s health centre for treatment.
Other students of the university were said to have been angered by the report of the accident.
The protested and paraded the alleged criminal at the Soun of Ogbomoso’s Palace, Oba Jimoh Oyewunmi.
