A major redesign of one of the bestselling cars in the world, the Camry, is in the works, as Toyota Motor Corporation has hinted about plans to add aluminium body panels to the model.
A report obtained from Automotive News on Tuesday also indicated that another vehicle under the Toyota management, the 2016 Lexus RX, would receive an aluminium hood and tailgate when released this year.
The report added that the automaker would exploit a joint venture with a metal manufacturer in the Camry and Lexus RX aluminium project.
It, however, did not give the name of the metal firm involved in the project.
“The all-new Camry (not the 2015 update) will have an aluminium hood in 2018,” it stated.
The report is expected to elicit some excitement from the motoring public and Toyota already anticipates that the Camry and Lexus RX alumininum project will raise its total volume sale significantly.
Toyota may be scoring another major point over the competition in the top sedan segment as fuel efficiency has always been a strong selling point for Toyota models in this category.
Luxury brands such as Audi, Jaguar and Land Rover have heavily used aluminium on many models to reduce the vehicles’ weight and improve fuel efficiency.
Like the Corolla, another popular Toyota sibling, the Camry has been a big seller for a long time and experts attribute this to the car’s affordability, fuel economy and easy maintenance.
The Camry currently faces strong competition from recently refreshed Honda Accord, Ford Fusion and Nissan Altima among others.
Auto reviewers note the 2015 Toyota Camry has been given a very extensive refresh, just three model years after the introduction of the current generation.
The last generation of Camry is considered one of the longest best-selling models.
Many reviewers who have had a test drive of the 2015 Camry say it has been given a sweeping redesign-with a completely new look for the interior and exterior.
An online auto journal, The Car Connection, in its review of the latest Camry, says the mid-size Toyota Camry four-door sedan is the best-selling passenger car in the United States market. It’s become known for reliability, a comfortable ride, a roomy interior and decent fuel mileage.
It says, “For 2015, Toyota has given the Camry a full makeover. The result is the most aggressive looking Camry to date, borrowing many cues from the recent Corolla restyle. All of the body panels save the roof have been replaced with reshaped parts, and the interior has been upgraded with new technology and nicer materials.
“Toyota also made changes to the chassis to make the Camry more involving to drive, while the powertrains have been left alone.”
Engine performance
The car comes standard with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 178 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. Its front-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission are standard.
An online car reviewer, Edmunds, says in testing, the Camry moves from zero to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds.
The Camry XSE and XLE can be equipped with a 3.5-litre V6 that produces 268 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque.
The report about the Camry in the local market is also inspiring.
Mandilas, one of the dealers of the Toyota brand of vehicles in Nigeria, describes the car as smooth, pleasant and worry-free.
Writing about the Camry on its website, Mandilas states, “Over the past 25 years, it (Camry) has become the standard for quality. In fact, 90 per cent of all Camry cars sold in the last 15 years are still on the road.”
Interior
Other test drivers say the 2015 Camry has a redesigned interior, which now matches what the competition offers. They hail the contemporary styling and quality materials, especially in higher XSE and XLE trims.
The US News Rankings and Reviews, also an online journal, notes that the car seats five and comes standard with an eight-way power-adjustable driver seat.
It lists features available in the new Camry as heated front seats and a four-way power-adjustable passenger seat. The base LE trim has cloth upholstery, the SE has faux leather, the XSE has faux suede and the XLE has leather.
“Test drivers report that the Camry has one of the quietest cabins in the class. They also say that it has a huge rear seat, with ample head- and legroom for tall passengers,” it states.
The dashboard and door panels, according to motortrend.com, make the Camry look far more modern and the materials are improved throughout.
Exterior
Reviewers say the Camry’s changes are obvious on the outside, where all but the roof has been restyled.
The grille is bigger, more prominent and indicative of the pricier Toyota Avalon and its Lexus corporate cousins, reports Edmund.com.
It states, “In profile, the Camry is more sculpted and less slab-like, and the car’s rear styling has been smoothed out. Overall, we think the Camry looks more refined, premium and grown up.”
The Camry has what Toyota calls an aggressive front-end appearance, with Led front running lamps plus available Led auto-levelling lamps for the low and high beams, says caranddriver.com.
Safety
Edmund also notes that every 2015 Camry comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front and rear side airbags, front and rear side curtain airbags, front knee airbags and a rearview camera.
It gives the options on the XSE and XLE to include a blind-spot warning system paired with a rear cross traffic alert system.
It states, “The advanced technology package adds a lane-departure warning system and a pre-collision system that uses the adaptive cruise control sensors to anticipate an accident, warn the driver and brake if need be to prevent or mitigate an accident. Optional only on the XLE is safety connect, which adds automatic collision notification, an emergency assist button and a stolen-vehicle locator.”
